The Virginia Avenue Project brings at risk youth between the ages of six and eighteen together with professional writers, actors and directors to create evenings of theatre. Inspired by the programs of The 52nd Street Project in New York City, The Virginia Avenue Project began holding acting and writing workshops at the Police Activities League in Santa Monica's Pico Corridor in March of 1992. In its first five years, the Project has produced 115 plays, involved over 150 children and scores of professional theatre artists. The purpose of the Project is to bring every child who participates in touch with his or her full potential through the process of writing and or performing in plays, and to give adult artists a way to give back to the community and to the next generation.
