A starter is necessary to make Amish Friendship Bread and ours will get you going if you don't have one. While our starter is a "sourdough" type, don't let this deter you; the sweetness of the Amish Friendship Bread ingredients will be effectively enhanced by the starter's distinctive flavor.
We have developed a modification of the Amish recipe that begins with using our non-milk-based starter in place of the traditional milk-based Amish starter. By using our recipe and starter you can make the traditional milk-based Amish starter for your friendship bread and have a flour based starter that you can safely store in your refrigerator to boot!
The advantages of beginning with a non-milk-based starter are fourfold:
- The starter enhances the flavor of Amish Friendship Bread.
- When properly (and easily) maintained, the starter under refrigeration can last a lifetime.
- You need not bake every 5 to 7 days to avoid spoilage of the milk-based starter; each time you want to make friendship bread simply start over using your non-milk based starter (kept in your refrigerator) and our recipe.
- It's outrageously economical.
